The Duke Nukem 3D usermap, Guilty (GUILTY.MAP) by Robert Travis, completed in 00:17 in eDuke32 with Duke Nukem: Weapon of Mass Destruction v1.0 by Dan "DeeperThought" Gaskill, which you can find at http://www.csus.edu/indiv/g/gaskilld/DNWMD.rar . What follows is the description from the text file included in that .ZIP: On January 29, 1996, Duke Nukem 3D was released. Included with it were the tools used to create the lively worlds Duke fought those friggin' aliens in, including the level editor: Build. From there, the Duke Nukem 3D mapping scene was born. The earliest maps were rather poor, but as time went on, there came to be some shining gems. One of the authors of these good maps was Robert Travis, who designed this map in September 1996, eight months after the game's release. He would go on to join WizardWorks, where he did level design work for their add-on packs, Duke it Out in D.C. and Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach. While he designed this level for Dukematch, he also included some monsters so that the level would be a challenge to play in single-player. Except, apparently, in the process of doing this, he didn't pay much attention to the layout he had made. The level's origins as a Dukematch level are quite visible, as reaching the exit is so easy, it's almost insulting. After entering the teleporter, you just have to dash into an elevator, take it up to the alcove, flip the switch, rush over the opened bars, and boom, you can hit the Auto Destruct and win the level in under 20 seconds. Cut the guy some slack, though; it was meant for Dukematch in the first place, plus the mapping scene was in its infancy at the time! ;) With that description, copied and pasted from the text file for GUIL-015.DMO, over with, let's get to what THIS demo is all about. In April 2007, Dan Gaskill, a.k.a. DeeperThought, released v1.0 of an eDuke32 mod entitled "Duke Nukem: Weapon of Mass Destruction" that takes heavy advantage of that source port's advanced scripting system to add all sorts of new stuff, like skill points, a menu where you can purchase upgrades with these skill points, and more "realistic" gameplay, which means Duke isn't the Olympian runner and jumper he is by default. Among the upgrades you can acquire are four upgrades to your legs, including a speed upgrade. However, there are two others which are equally important to this run: Dodge Dodge Moves, which allows Duke to do a fast step forward in any of the cardinal directions to dodge enemy fire; and Special Kicks, which grants Duke two new kick techniques, one of which is the "Vampire Kick," a rushing side kick that increases the player's health by a portion of the amount of damage it deals to the enemy. Of course, while Duke moves slower overall (even with the speed upgrade,) the Dodge and the Vampire Kick both carry the player forward a good distance (especially the Vampire Kick) very quickly, and could be used to speed through a map, especially with Running Speed (the speed upgrade,) as long as you watch your Stamina Meter (which the techniques use up.) Plus, when you begin a level with a clean slate (i.e. you only have the pistol,) the upgrade menu automatically appears, and you start with enough skill points to purchase all four leg upgrades. With this in mind, I decided to record a companion run to GUIL-015, using the same route, where I achieve close to the same time I did in regular Duke by carefully abusing those upgrades to the maximum, as Guilty is the first level of the mod's user map compilation episode, "Retribution." I start off, obviously, by purchasing the upgrades and entering the teleporter as quickly as possible. After that, for the most part, I Vampire Kick my way to victory, but for the stairway, I use the Dodge, since the Kick doesn't exactly climb staircases. I originally got 00:20, and then 00:19, followed by at least three 00:18s, before finally nabbing 00:17, just two seconds shy of my current vanilla Duke record. Who knows if I can achieve an even faster time? And who knows what other interesting runs are possible for maps in this mod? :D
