US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has commended the 'Commission on Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation' which Presient Rajapaksa has appointed. Mrs. Hillary said the Commission is a promising opportunity to move forward. She made these observations during a meeting with External Affairs Minster Prof. GL Peiris. Discusions centred on Sri Lanka's progress after the successful completion of the conflict against the LTTE. She said the US is very supportive of the approach made by Sri Lanka. The US will continue to work with the country and observe this Commission. The Secretary of State noted that United State has long been a friend of Sri Lanka. Both countries share a history of democratic institutions. The US Aid programme has so far invested more than 1.9 Billion Dollars in Sri Lanka. The United States strongly supported political and ethnic reconciliation in Sri Lanka. The US Secretary of State was optimistic that Sri Lanka would remain a strong, united country by drawing on the strength of all of its citizens, valuing the diversity of its people, and ensuring equal rights for everyone. Minister GL Peiris said it's a time of great promise and hope for Sri Lanka. Terrorism has been eradicated and there is unprecedented political stability in the country.
