Councillor Nando Iannicca discusses Enersource. At one point he implies that Mississauga should have sold the thing years ago when it was worth much more than it is today. From a May 14th, 2007 Toronto Star article: For months now, Parrish has led the charge at council to reduce what's she deems the "absolutely outrageous" salaries paid to the board of Enersource, the hydro utility in which the city is major shareholder. The citizens and politicians who sit on the board, including McCallion, used to earn $32,000 to $50,000 a year to attend about 16 two-hour meetings. McCallion's response to the criticism was to give up her $32,000 board pay, which was on top of her $164,000 salary as mayor and regional councillor, and to call on other politicians on the board to do likewise. But she argued vigorously to increase citizen representatives on the board and to keep their salaries high. In a series of heated meetings, council did just the opposite. In February, McCallion was mightily upset when councillors, in a closed-door session, bucked tradition by removing the city manager from the Enersource board, reduced the number of citizen representatives on it from five to four, and doubled the number of politicians to four. Last month, McCallion faced the indignity of finding council had decided, in a debate initiated by veteran councillor Frank Dale, to slash board directors' salaries to $15,000 -- all while she was away on a trade mission to China. McCallion lost another battle last week, when she failed to persuade councillors to rejig the citizen/politician balance on the Enersource board. In all this, the spotlight has been on Ward 6 councillor Parrish, the four-term former Liberal MP whose sharp tongue made her a parliamentary maverick. Parrish denies McCallion's talk of deals being made behind the scenes. But she acknowledges that her arrival, along with that of fellow newcomer Sue McFadden (Ward 10), has shaken up the 12-member council. "I'm not flexing any muscle," Parrish said. "I'm just going after issues that have bothered me for many years as a resident of Mississauga. "Before, things were pro forma. Issues would come forward, everybody would raise their hands and it would go forward." On Enersource, she says McCallion is "hanging on to an institution that has just not produced for us," any new, financially fruitful investments.
