Oh, the stench is the first thing I noticed during the night August 2006 when I took our Jack Russell Terrier out to potty. As we live in the country, we've had a lot of sick or stray animals dumped on our property. One night I took our dog back inside and saw movement in a dried mud puddle. I couldn't tell much, as the animal wouldn't let me within 100 feet. I began by leaving a bowl of water, the next night increasing it to two bowls, along with food. I would watch the dog out the window as he drank the water and ate the food, then disappeared into the night. I began to mix infection meds into his food, and one day my husband located his hiding spot while walking our Quinn. Finally--we knew why he wouldn't come to me--he'd been shot in the head, and he was blind due to a baseball sized knot of infection between his eyes. I've never seen anything like the abuse this animal suffered--I was SO angry. He'd been shot between the eyes, and he was so sick, my son took him to the vet to have him put down--I'd become attached, and just couldn't see him suffer any longer. The vet said we might save him, but it would take months, so expecting my son to return with the dog to be buried in our family animal plot, imagine my surprise when he drove in with the dog sitting up beside him in the front seat of his vehicle. As I'd called him my little "buddy" as I nursed him for weeks 24/7, the name stuck, and he officially became "Buddy." Vet bills ran over $500 quickly, as the head wound was bigger than a baseball, and Buddy's blindness continued. At three weeks, he finally saw me for the first time--a very special moment for us both. For weeks to come, I had to apply meds directly into the wound six times a day, feed him by hand, administer multiple drugs, including the salve and dip to cure the red manges he had become infected with--not a threat to our other dog as it is caused by a type of parasite that gets under an animals skin and eats it away. After six long months of care, Buddy gained from 40 pounds to 90 pounds, has beautiful, curly hair, and is my constant companion. He sleeps beside our bed on a large pillow, and gets in bed with us during thunderstorms and, oddly, when the toaster bell goes off. He is the most gentle dog, appreciative companion I've ever had--except for my husband, of course. His courage has been an inspiration for me as I struggle with a chronic illness. He protects me without caution to any other threat as we walk daily or go out in the night. He truly is--my Buddy, a blessing I can't imagine living without. Hide
