This time about the revolt in Bosnie , because he believes that the coverage by the press in the Netherlands has been too biased. His teachers at the film- and television academy saw a great future in him as actor of international fame. In Belgrade he could at a youthful age take a plane at any time for Hollywood or Rome. But cockily he refused, Film stars. That are clowns, he now knows 25 years later. Now the quirks of fate have brought about that Sean Connery, Robert de Niro and Dustin Hofmann would not need to think twice before temporarily creeping under the skin of Slobodan Mitric, alias Karate Bob. Born on March 1, 1948 in the Yugoslavian village Backo Dobro Polje, Mitric has more enemies than friends, does not demand much from life, but recognizes as no other its worth and most of the time, in order to survive, stays in hiding. His explanation, When I was young, I was too nave to understand life. I believed in what others taught me. That I am still alive is a miracle. In the attic that he shares with girl friend and artist Iris, it is incredibly hot. The provisional ventilator that Mitric installed is not cooling properly. On the only table there are some cheese cakes and liter bottle of water that Slobodan drinks out of regularly. Iris brings in coffee, the hospitality is great. DEAD Beautiful, colored paintings by Iris are hanging on the attic walls. Time for expositions, she does not have. The woman who has been for many years at his side is too often and too much preoccupied with the problems that she and her partner are having to deal with. These are, certainly after this former Yugoslav secret agent shot and killed on Christmas eve 1973 three countrymen and seriously wounded two others, not petty. The karate expert came to do that in the conviction that the quintet was out to kill him. The day before he managed to escape from an attempt on his life with a submachine gun. The attackers were said to be on orders of the Yugoslav secret service CBOB out to get rid of him. This was a result of his refusal to liquidate at that time the Yugoslav immigrant Vladimir Dapcevic. And whats more, Mitric told Dapcevic, who was later abducted to Yugoslavia and who apparently after years in prison is still alive there, about his order. This amounts according to him and experts to high treason to the secret service. The court in Amsterdam sentenced Karate Bob for multiple manslaughter to thirteen years in prison. As a result of rape which he was supposed to have committed during an interruption of sentence, he later received an additional five years. After his conditional release on May 16 1986 he was immediately declared as an undesirable alien. BACK Attempts by him and Iris to find a country that was willing to accept him led nowhere. The Dutch state decided to send Slobodan Mitric back to Yugoslavia, the only country in the world that on the basis of his nationality could simply not refuse him. Karate Bob and his friends, including Yugoslav exiles living in America, resisted this expulsion with all their might. Prominent Eastern-Europe experts such as Prof. dr. C. F. Rter and Dr. W. J. Broekmeyer shared their suspicion that Mitrics life in case of expulsion would be in great danger and that he would be liquidated for high treason. After days of great tension, during which Mitric in his cell attempted to commit suicide, the president of the court in The Hague made short work of the position of the state. Article 3 of the Convention of Rome prohibits expulsion to a place where the possibility exists of inhuman treatment, as such motivated the president his ruling that Karate Bob could in no way be put on board a already reserved plane to Belgrade. In the attic room, that looks like a storage place for a museum, Slobodan Mitric appears relaxed. As a result of a new, apparently proven case of rape he stands to soon receive another two years in prison, but he has learned not to look beyond the day. I feel relatively safe now, later I will see, he remarked and later that I actually trust no one anymore.People whom I thought were my friend, turned out to be traitors. Honesty lasts longest. Yugoslavia he still holds dear, he confesses. I love my country, even though they want to murder me. In the past turbulent times Karate Bob wrote several books, such as among others Geheim agent van Tito (Secret Agent of Tito) and Titos Moordmachine. The first one created as a result of a number of accusation bad blood with the Dutch Ministry of Justice as well a with the Yugoslav authorities. A worsening of the diplomatic relations between both countries was avoided at the very last moment. Attempts to prevent the publication of the book failed however. In 1984 he wrote a theater play in free verse that he published as a book. In The Bible of the Man Without Faith he advanced himself as the eternal student. His imaginary meetings with Aristotle, Plato, Buddha, Moses, Mihailovic, Freud but also Hitler and Stalin again caused a stir. Slobodan Mitric and his girl friend have worked day and night for a new theater play in free verse, The Battle of Kosovo. It was a if Slobodan was driven by history itself to write this paly, Iris says. He himself, Thirty years Ive thought about this historical narrative. Now Ive written it down in a couple of weeks. The immediate reason was the in his eyes unbiased reporting by the international press about the recent unrest in Yugoslavian Kosovo. Serbs were described completely unjustly as murderous guys. Moreover it is these days exactly 600 years ago that in Kosovo a bloody battle took place between Serbs and Turks. According to Mitric it is thanks to the death of many thousands of Serbs that Western Europe was not overrun any further by the Turks. This was because the latter had used up too much energy and lost too many lives in order after Kosovo to capture Western Europe. The Serbs in 1389 chose for death instead of slavery under the Turks, says the author. Patiently he explains how the Serbs live and think. If we believe in something, we really believe in it, he says. We never doubt, because we have accepted God. The Serbs live in small houses, light fires outside to roast their meat and will never steal. They are a peace-loving, hospitable people. There you will find true faith. As a child of 7, 8 years old in Bosnie Kosovo I experienced how the Islam was forced upon me. That I cannot forget and that is why I want to fight for the Serbs. What I write down, is felt by my people. Kosovo is my heart, already from my childhood. He holds that the media in his eyes have not taken the history of Serbia in account that around the year 1200 was a great kingdom comprising many countries. Tito has ultimately divided much of what little remained of Serbia, he notes scornfully in broken Dutch. Kosovo was actually given to the Albanian migrants there, so that the Serbs who live there came into a subservient situation. That is not fair, because Kosovo belongs historically speaking to the Serbs. Not the Albanians, but the Serbs have given their lives for Kosovo. Thus it is for those people unbearable to have to live under Islamic control. FORGOTTEN HISTORY Slobodan Mitric calls the battle of Kosovo a forgotten piece of history. A lieutenant of Yugoslavian origin, who in America is serving a sentence of forty years for airplane hijacking, has in the mean time read the play. He thinks that the battle of Kosovo should be read by the Serbian youth. Mitric: It is a completely unknown battle, in Holland too many are aware of it, even historians that I consulted knew little about this subject. But in France the bells were ringing that day, while the Pope has canonized the dead. Perhaps we are going to publish this play in the Netherlands. I dont have to earn a guilder. We dont need so much. I only hope something will be done with it, here and in Yugoslavia. From The Battle of Kosovo: In the palace hall of Tsar Lazar, Jug Bogdan and his sons bid farewell to mother Jugovic and their only sister. All leave the hall except the youngest son Bosko and his little sister. Bosko holds the sky-blue flag, on which an icon of the risen Christ has been painted, firmly in his hand. SISTER JUGOVIC: Dear brother, please be so kind, And do not leave poor me/ Alone with our mother, without not even one brother. I begged everyone of our brothers for mercy/ And to stay behind with me and mama. Butnot one wanted to listen to me/ You, Bosko, are my last hope BOJ NA KOSOVU - БОЈ НА КОСОВУ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHfaxADkoFg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJeSd5CpIjw THE BATTLE OF KOSOVO This realistic rendition is chilling to the bone, even for someone who understands no Serbian but has read the Dutch translation. This drama is no mere nationalistic lore, but world literature, similar for example to the epic poem "Willehalm" by the German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach about the defence of the Southern flank of the Carolingian Empire at the beginning of the 9th century against the invading Muslim Moors from Spain. May it be produced soon on a real stage or appear on the screen! Tears for Fears, named after a phrase found in Arthur Janov's book Prisoners of Pain, is a British pop/rock outfit formed in 1981 in Bath, England, by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, two school friends and ex-members of Graduate. Initially associated with new wave and the new romantic movements, the duo's earliest work (through 1983's The Hurting) was explicitly based around the confusion and angst of adolescence. Though top forty regulars on both sides of the Atlantic, Orzabal and Smith made their major international breakthrough with Songs From the Big Chair in 1985, which included their most commercially popular material to date (scoring two Billboard Hot 100 #1s and a UK #2). They released three albums - the synthesizer-based The Hurting (1983), Songs from the Big Chair (1985) (which broke free from the new-wave mold) and the jazz/blues/Beatles influenced The Seeds of Love (1989) - before Orzabal and Smith had an extremely acrimonious falling out.
