A look at the assumptions and biases behind reifying intelligence. when asked to rank personal qualities in order of desirability, people put intelligence second only to good health. http://www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/reingold/courses/intelligence/cache/1198gottfred.html Scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children were analyzed in a sample of 7-year-old twins from the National Collaborative Perinatal Project. A substantial proportion of the twins were raised in families living near or below the poverty level. Biometric analyses were conducted using models allowing for components attributable to the additive effects of genotype, shared environment, and nonshared environment to interact with socioeconomic status (SES) measured as a continuous variable. Results demonstrate that the proportions of IQ variance attributable to genes and environment vary nonlinearly with SES. The models suggest that in impoverished families, 60% of the variance in IQ is accounted for by the shared environment, and the contribution of genes is close to zero; in affluent families, the result is almost exactly the reverse. http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1046/j.0956-7976.2003.psci_1475.x Let's pretend for a moment that the IQ gap between whites and blacks is a real genetic phenomena and that, on average, blacks are about 15 points below whites. That's the essential argument as I understand it. So let's pretend they are right. Even if we completely accept their "science" as relevant or meaningful, it doesn't naturally follow that we would naturally part ways. Did I miss something here? Did the all-important-email that we are playing IQ survivor get put in my junk box? Sorry, all people of African descent...wait, no, that would mean all of us...all African-Americans in this country will have to leave now? Why would we split up? If you found out your bestfriend had a lower IQ than you would you stop being friends? Does anyone even care about IQ? What if whites had the lower IQ? Would we all pack our bags and go back to Europe? You see, the gist of informing us about this IQ gap isn't to just say, "Wow, did you know blah, blah, blah." It's to justify creating a white nation, you know, to secure a future for white children. But where are they going to start this whitelandia? Antartica? The way I see it, even if they were right and IQ was completely genetic or mostly genetic...whatever, you still don't have an argument for separating. Shit, I've got a dog that lives with me! Poor guy can't even take an IQ test but he's staying! Moreover, I've yet to see a task or intellectual feat that a black person cannot do that a white person can. The whole debate might take on new meaning if they could show some cognitive task that whites could perform and blacks could not. But that's not the case, is it? Genes do explain the vast majority of IQ differences among children in wealthier families, the new work shows. But environmental factors—not genetic deficits—explain IQ differences among poor minorities. http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45/297.html SES and IQ heritability: http://w-uh.com/articles/030904-SES_and_IQ_heritab.html Socioeconomic status modifies heritability of iq in young children * Eric Turkheimer, * Andreana Haley, * Mary Waldron, * Brian D'Onofrio, and * Irving I. "HORACE: The Bridge Builder King" (1995-96) PART I LINK TO: PART II: http://youtube.com/watch?v=f2yu7WMxbVc HORACE KING TEACHER GUIDE PDF http://www.auburn.edu/~lenartc/hk_teacherguide.pdf HORACE:The Bridge Builder King is an hour long documentary about a freed slave in the 1800s named Horace King. His Master, John Godwin always treated Horace as a partner or as an equal in all of their business dealings. He was well known around the south for constructing town lattice truss covered bridges. He was in the bridging building business from around 1820 until around 1885. Born in Cheraw District of South Carolina a slave. The Alabama Legislature freed Horace King on Feb 3, 1846 by an Act of the Legislature in order to keep his talents in Alabama. Horace built gun boats for the Confederate Navy during the Civil War and is likely, the only slave ever to have erected a moment on a master's grave. Horace did just that in 1859 and the monument is still located at the Godwin Cemetary in Phenix City, Alabama. Historical Consultants: Thomas French, Jr. RLS - Dr. John Lupold, Ph.D., Columbus State University - William H. Green, Ph.D., Lexington, Kentucky - Richard Bailey, Ph.D., Montgomery, Alabama Karl-Heinz Reilmann, Richmond, Virgina Kaye Minchew, Archivist-LaGrange, Georgia Trivia: Somewhere around 1995-1996, while the production was full under way, Tom Lenard and Thomas French, Jr (noted Horace King Historian) had the good fortune to be able to speak with noted Ken Burns "Civil War" historian Shelby Foote when he visited Auburn University to present a Franklin Lecture and to talk to a history class. Tom Lenard arranged a meeting with Shelby Foote in the hopes of having Shelby Speak or address how well the covered bridges were built and thus made it difficult for the Union Troops to prosecute the War. When Tom Lenard asked Shelby Foote about the bridges that Horace King built in the South Shelby replied, "Well, frankly, I didn't know there were any covered bridges in the south during the Civil War!"...Both Tom Lenard and Thomas French, Jr were speechless at that point. Mr Foote said he was sorry and thus, not able to add any tidbits that could be used in the documentary on Horace King. Amazing that someone who supposedly knew which General had a headache before a certian battle or which one had broken a shoelace would not be aware of covered bridges in the south during the Civil War is really surprising.
