The sole purpose of this 50 sec. demo was to see the image quality differences between upgrading to HDV vs. DV capture in the "S8mm DIY transfer system Demo V1.1 "HD"" described in Vimeo video: vimeo.com/1361634. All other steps are kept the same, including use of the same Sony V1U 3CMOS camcorder. This demo is presented FYI here. It was originally created for evaluation viewing on a 1920x1080 60" class HD set using the HDMI output of an HDV camcorder. For comparison with 1080 HDV, the 720x480 DV was upconverted to 1080p using Lanczos3 resampling. This is probably higher quality than the built-in conversion of "legacy" SD to HD performed by most HD sets. TECHNICAL FYI: The film frames are extracted from the MPEG-2 stream with a small utility program I wrote. A “Sync light” is provided by a small LED positioned in the LLC FOV. It is connected to the projectors "mouse" microswitch. The captured HDV is Exported from the CS3 Premier timeline as Sequentially numbered .bmp’s. The program looks at each .bmp and notes if it has a light. The program also deletes all .bmp’s that are not a certain “count” from the last .bmp with a light. The count is set by the user after inspecting a few frames on the timeline to see where the light comes on relative to the frame(s) containing pulldown motion. Once set, there is no need to change the count unless you change the projector speed or mess with the microswitch. VIMEO VIEWING at 1280x720, even fullscreen, shows very little difference. The HDV is a little cleaner, but very little additional image detail is seen. However, 1920x1080 viewing of HDV on a 60" set definitly showed some increase in small detail. The additional detail could also be seen on a 20" CRT editing monitor when put in 100% display mode. CONCLUSION: I will use HDV for Telecine capture as a compromise that is one step below using uncompressed 1080p 4:2:2 via the cameras HDMI port. This would require purchase of a new NLE system just to allow use of a PCIe Blackmagic HDMI capture card.
