If the notion of 'presence' or 'charisma' is understood as the ability to command attention, then it is likely that an evolutionary account of this phenomenon can be offered. Presence, from this perspective, means that one manifests traits which others recognise as bearing (ultimately) on their survival and likelihood of thriving. In other words, it would be adaptive if we found our attention drawn to individuals who would be likely to impact on that survival and thriving; potential mates, sources of nourishment, prey, threats, etc. We might also necessarily have an innately enhanced awareness of individuals who seemed to manifest particularly high levels of control, over the environment and over their own bodies. To the extent that we might wish to develop 'presence', perhaps in a theatrical context, then this suggests possible mechanisms for such development. Control over one's body, for example, might be enhanced through psychophysical training in such things as 'mindfulness'.
