"Strategic directions", for a "business" -- this means summarising our information so that it explains our actions. So if we are More
"Strategic directions", for a "business" -- this means summarising our information so that it explains our actions. So if we are using the concept of "strategic directions" in our model, then it will explain how we behave. If we are not behaving in a way that we like, then we might experiment with changing the "strategic directions". Hypothesis: an actor (e.g. on a stage) is speaking to a simulated world. Here, the simulation is taking place within the actor's mind. This concept is applicable to the development of automated agents -- where it has been understood, at least since the days of computing in the 1900's, that we need to have complex mental models of ourself and others. It would be interested to implement a model of a workplace as automated agents. Even for, say three actors in a workplace, each actor would have models of themselves and the other two actors -- they would also have, perhaps, their own model of how each other actor modelled the actors. So each actor then would also have a model which showed how the actor modelled each actor modelling each actor. Do we need to keep going ...? Current HRM systems seem to have begun to be promoted around 1980 -- at the same, computer system development methodologies were beginning to be promoted. The aim was, presumably, to reduce any office work to a set of known activities. As an abstraction, each activity can be modelled as "fill in a form", e.g. to record some object arriving at or leaving some post. However, even by the early 1980's, it was not unusual for a development methodology to standardise the use of as many as 100 different KINDS of forms. As far as I know, none of these methodologies work - perhaps they are a ploy with a hidden agenda. In the 1970's, cash machines were being sometimes attacked by bank workers who feared the loss of their jobs -- it was thought that most of the work in a book could be replaced by machines. By 1990 computers began to be widepsread in government offices. By 1995 computers were very widespread in most offices, e.g. to operate the cash register in a shop, or to record details of some other transaction. Someone said that work is a way of avoiding doing anything with one's life. I worked till I was 44, being extremely careful not to leave a job until I had another one. By leaving, I was able to complete teacher training,do a master of science course, work in USA in 1995. What is critical for now is to manage the next week (till I am 63), and then to manage the year after that (till I am 64). What I hope to write up in the next year, is a small paper giving a revision of my ideas from 1987, which were based on my ideas from the previous 20 years. Proposal: state machine model of activity. It is thought that "model theory" (defining objects and operations -- as in Birkhoff and Maclane, A Survey of Modern Algebra, 1960) is a good way to build models. We can begin to build such models from a natural language sentence or paragraph describing a system. HRM classifies people. This is exactly what we might expect of a system which is intended to operate a machine which makes profits for SOME of the people. What would we get if we designed a system that made profits for ALL of the people? For example, I once saw a manual for Oracle database which pointed out that one could build a HRM system which allocated new job descriptions to everyone every day. "We do not need to allocate resources. This is done automatically. The system tells us what to do, day by day". This will not work because the automated system does not know enough. Instead, we will need to present our opinions to the system, automated or not, in order to influence the results obtained. No doubt we need access to economic models of the business. Ideally we would want to have VR models to interact with. In the light of the above interest in VR, This is a project for completion by Mar 2008 -- Developing a VR office which will parse some rules, and issue orders to build a system. We will start with the need to process some BNF rules to implement an interpreter. As guesswork or as the result of a dream, I suggest that the essence of a device which can study "strategic directions" is a device which can build a system from bnf rules. My point is that I need a device which can model the future -- the only means I have to do this seems to be to build a system simulator by implementing a device which runs from simple statements each no more complex than a BNF rule. Perhaps BNF rules are just what we need if they allow us to define the objects and operations we need. I propose using robotic devices to interpret rules in a VR world.
