The Korima mural project is an ongoing collaboration between Apoyo Tarahumara, a humanitarian organization supporting the Tarahumara since the early 1990s, and Art4change, a program that helps communities create public art projects that raise critical consciousness within a community. Both organizations have a foundational impetus that strives for social justice. This collaboration began in the summer of 2007 when the Tarahumara women's collective--Kari Igomari Niwara--from the Ejido de San Ignacio,Chihuahua, Mexico--suggested that a mural was needed at their autonomous elementary school. The collaboration that evolved consisted of extensive dialogues between the Art4change mural director (r2row) and members of Kari Igomari Niwara and the principal, teachers and students from the autonomous school where the mural was to be painted. Phase One of the mural design was a collaborative effort between Art4change muralists (conceptual design was created by Roy Darr) and the ongoing input from the San Ignacio community. A second and final phase will continue through the Summer of 2011 where a mural will be painted on the front wall of the school. What follows is a visual documentary of the painting process completed in June 2010.
