As I Die est tiré du maxi éponyme sorti en 93, entre les albums Shades of God et Draconian Time. Le groupe est presque inconnu dans son propre pays mais est extrêmement populaire dans le reste de l'Europe, notamment en Grèce et en Allemagne. <br />Souvent crédité pour avoir été l'un des pionniers du gothic metal, le groupe a souvent étonné la critique et les fans par son goût pour l'innovation et l'expérimentation, une volonté de travailler avec des producteurs d'autres horizons musicaux et un refus de se répéter d'un album à l'autre. Cette approche, bien que critiquée, leur a permis de conquérir au fur et à mesure de nouveaux fans. Je parlais d’un changement lors de la sortie d’As I Die. En effet, c’est à partir de ce moment que le groupe incorporera des synthés et des samples dans ses compos. <br />Le groupe a versé successivement dans le doom/death, le gothic metal puis la synth pop, donc, avant de verser à nouveau dans le gothic metal. <br />La formation de Paradise Lost est remarquable par sa longévité pour un groupe de metal, seul le poste de batteur ayant changé.
