In the Battle of Teutobourg Forest in 9 AD some 6 Germanic tribes commanded by Arminius ambushed & slaughtered 3 legions the XVII, XVIII & XIX under the command of Publius Quinctilius Varus. It was one of the greatest Roman defeats, it is said that the Emperor Octavian Caesar Augustus weapt "Varus, Varus give me back my legions!!!" upon hearing the news of the disaster. Although Rome Total War is mostly about Rome, strange to say that most of its historical battles are great Roman defeats & only 1 of them is a Roman Victory, the battle of Cynoscephalae. Anyway, this is just the 2nd time that i played this battle of Teutobourg forest. Those damned berserkers destroyed many of my legionaries during the 1st ambush that by the time of the 2nd ambush i had much less than half my army & in the last ambush i had just remains of 4 units lol, so my victory was a narrow one. In fact, i thought it was lost & it was quite a surprise that i won. The 1st time i played it i was about to win it also when i routed more than 2/3 of their units but when it was almost done my general got killed. i really hate when sometimes in a critical moment i give an order to a unit & it doesn't obey right away, u got to order it again, & in some cases that could mean defeat. However, throughout history many soldiers either mistook orders or didn't hear them & it sucks more when its happening for real. Hide
