The "Alabama Song" (also known as "Whiskey Bar") was originally published in Bertolt Brecht's Hauspostille (1927). It was set to music by Kurt Weill for the 1927 "Songspiel" Mahagonny and used again in Weill's and Brecht's 1930 opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. In the latter, it is performed by the character Jenny and her fellow prostitutes in the first act. Musically it contains elements of foxtrot, blues and advanced soprano coloraturas, sung by Jenny. The lyrics are attributed to Bertolt Brecht, but they were probably actually written by Elisabeth Hauptmann. [1] The lyrics for the "Alabama Song" are in English (albeit specifically idiosyncratic English) and are performed in that language even when the opera is performed in its original German. The song has often been covered, very early on by Dave Van Ronk (of the Greenwich Village folk movement) in 1964, but perhaps most famously in 1967 by rock band The Doors. Unsurprisingly, Jim Morrison changed "Show us the way to the next pretty boy" to "Show me the way to the next little girl", which David Bowie sang as "Show us the way to the next whiskey bar" in the late 1970s (thereby perhaps not by chance exactly matching how the line read in Brecht's Hauspostille before being part of the Mahagonny works). The British jazz musician Mike Westbrook regularly featured the song in performances of his Brass Band in the 1970s, with lyrics usually provided by his wife Kate (formerly Barnard). The song was also included as part of a medley performed by Bette Midler in her 1977 live show and double album Live at Last. It was covered by The Young Gods on their 1991 release Play Kurt Weill, again with the lyrics, "Show us the way to the next little girl". David Johansen covered the song on a compilation of Kurt Weill's music entitled September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill, released in 1997. Marilyn Manson later covered the song live in a show in Berlin in 2003, during which he sang both lyrics. The French singers Arthur H. and Jeanne Cherhal also covered the song live, playing four-hand piano, and a video was soon released.

De single bereikte op 29 juli de eerste plaats in de Amerikaanse Billboard Pop Singles hitlijst en in augustus de 25e plaats in de Nederlandse Top 40. Het lied, zeven minuten lang op het album, geldt als een vroeg en typisch voorbeeld van psychedelische rock, met schier oneindige instrumentale solo's waarin invloeden uit Oosterse muziektradities en jazz aaneengeregen worden. Het Leitmotiv dat Ray Manzarek op zijn keyboard speelt, klinkt als een draaiorgel met een onverstoorbaar akkoordenschema. De sfeer die wordt opgeroepen is onpeilbaar en donker als de nacht, totdat het vuur wordt aangestoken. De controversile tekst veroorzaakte enig rumoer in het nette Amerika. Een beroemde anekdote verhaalt hoe televisiepresantator Ed Sullivan voorafgaand aan een optreden in de Ed Sullivan Show aan zanger Jim Morrison verzocht om de regel "girl, we couldn't get much higher" in het refrein te vervangen door "girl, we couldn't get much better", hoewel dat het rijm geen goed zou doen. De associatie met de roes van drugs zou het coast-to-coast miljoenenpubliek teveel choqueren. De afloop laat zich raden, en ze hoefden nooit meer terug te komen. In de film The Doors van Oliver Stone uit 1991 kijkt Val Kilmer als Jim Morrison recht de camera in als hij het verboden woord zingt.
